Maras Moray & Salt Mines

Home » Maras Moray & Salt Mines

baner-marasThis is a breathtaking tour which takes you towards the north east of Cusco, approximately an hour and a half driving through the Andes with impressive views of the beautiful snowcapped Chicon and Veronica mountains in the Cordillera Vilcanota. Once we arrive in Moray, we will visit “the Inca agricultural greenhouse or laboratory”, consisting of four platforms in the style of an amphitheater. With a depth of 150 meters, the overlapping concentric circular stone rings widen as they rise. I was an experimental place to study the adaptation of plants to new ecosystems. We will then continue the tour to Las Salineras, one of the salt mines, formed by more than 3000 small wells with an area of 1 km². These were already exploited since Inca times as a means of economic exchange and securities. It is a fascinating sight to see how the salt is recovered from these mines and to witness the real lives of the locals working there. We return to Cusco after visiting the mines, making the tour come to an end after around 6 or 7 hours.
